You cannot understand Middle Tennessee's built environment without understanding limestone. The same geological formation that produces the region's characteristic rolling hills, sinkholes, and spring-fed creeks also produces the pale gray carbonate rock that appears in the foundations of Shelbyville's oldest buildings, in the walls of the Gilliland House, in the county courthouse, in the retaining walls and bridge abutments that line Bedford County's rural roads. Limestone was the region's primary building material for its first century of settlement, quarried from outcroppings and bedrock exposures that occur across the county's landscape.
That's the building stone legacy. But limestone in Bedford County served purposes beyond construction.
Agricultural Limestone: The Invisible Industry
The most commercially significant use of Bedford County's limestone was not building , it was agriculture. Crushed limestone, applied to acidic soils, neutralizes pH and dramatically improves crop yields. Middle Tennessee's soils, while generally productive, vary in acidity across the region; the application of agricultural lime has been standard farming practice in the area since the early 19th century.
Limestone quarrying operations in Bedford County served this agricultural demand across the county's agricultural peak in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The county's farms , which in 1830 supported the largest population of any Tennessee county , consumed crushed limestone in quantities that made quarrying a genuine industry, not merely a sideline to construction. The operations that supplied this demand were distributed across the county near limestone outcroppings, some small and family-operated, others larger commercial enterprises serving multiple farms and communities.
The Gilliland House and Stone Craft
The most vivid surviving evidence of Bedford County's stone craft tradition is the Gilliland House , the structure James Gilliland built beginning in 1898 with fifteen-inch-thick walls of hand-quarried native limestone laid in coursed ashlar. Gilliland's work demonstrates that the stone available in Bedford County was not merely raw material for agricultural lime or rough rubble construction; in skilled hands, it could be cut and fitted to a precision that approaches the finest masonry work anywhere in the American South.
The Gilliland House's construction required Gilliland to quarry stone from deposits on or near his property, cut each piece to shape with hand tools, and move pieces weighing hundreds of pounds to the building site without mechanical assistance. The result , walls that are still structurally sound after 125 years , is evidence both of the quality of Bedford County's limestone and of the craft skill that the county's stone workers brought to their material.
The Limestone Landscape
The physical evidence of Bedford County's limestone quarrying history is visible across the rural landscape in ways that require some knowledge to read. Old quarry faces , vertical limestone exposures where bedrock was removed , appear along creek banks and hillsides, sometimes clearly artificial and sometimes indistinguishable from natural exposures without close examination. Stone walls along property lines, some dating to the early 19th century, were built from limestone cleared from fields during cultivation , the dual function of land clearing and boundary marking that produced miles of stone walls across Middle Tennessee's rural landscape.
The road system itself carries limestone history. County road construction in the 19th and early 20th centuries depended on crushed limestone for road base , the macadam construction technique that preceded modern paving used crushed stone, compacted and graded, as its primary material. The roads that connected Shelbyville to its surrounding communities were limestone roads, quarried from the same bedrock that the roads themselves were built to traverse.
Limestone in Shelbyville's Architecture
The oldest buildings in Shelbyville's historic district incorporate limestone in their foundations and structural elements , evidence of the era when building stone was quarried locally rather than shipped from distant sources. The Bedford County Courthouse, rebuilt after the 1924 fire, uses both brick and stone in its construction. The Old Rock Jail , currently under consideration for preservation investment , is named for its primary building material. The "rock" in that name is limestone, pulled from the same geological formation that underlies the courthouse square.
For visitors walking Shelbyville's historic districts, the limestone story is literally underfoot and in the walls on every side. The material that built the city came from the county's own ground , quarried, cut, and placed by people who understood that the best building material available was the rock that didn't need to be shipped anywhere because it was already there, waiting to be used.
That understanding , local material, local skill, local purpose , is the essence of Bedford County's limestone legacy. It was never a glamorous industry. It was never exported or celebrated the way the Walking Horse or the pencil trade were. It was simply foundational, in the most literal sense of the word.
